River towboat companies hire cooks on a regular basis

This can get your foot in the door in the river towboat industry

You must not get seasick

Do you have experience cooking nutritious meals for groups of up to twenty people or less ?

Are you in good health with no criminal history ?

Are you a young, clean shaven, hardworking person with excellent hygiene ?

High School education preferred

Experience with food preparation in a large-scale food preparation setting, i.e. school cafeteria, military food service, restaurant required

Ability to understand and follow safety and work related instructions is required

Required physical activities include walking, standing, balancing, climbing, bending, stooping, lifting (up to 40 lbs.), reaching, and pushing/pulling, handling/digital dexterity, talking, hearing, and seeing

Must be able to withstand exposure to hot surfaces and food, various odors, enclosed areas and may be exposed to smoke or steam

Must be 18 or older to board a vessel

Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or be able to attain it

Must be able to speak, read and write in the English language per USCG regulations

Must be able to be away for extended periods of time as schedules are generally 28 days away and 14 days home

You might be an excellent candidate to be a cook aboard a river going towboat

You are going to need these documents to get started:

A TWIC Card
A MERCHANT MARINERS CREDENTIAL( Food handlers rating )
A Safe/Serv Certificate

All these documents can be applied for online ( Google them )

Many towboat cooks learn the profession on the job while employed onboard as assistant cooks

But there are additional trade related certificates specifically for the Marine Culinary profession available at WESTERN KENTUCKY COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE,in Paducah, KY.

This community college sets the industry standard and has produced many professional towboat cooks and assistant cooks
